There's no short way to explain this so here goes... instead of a High school prom what high schools in Finland do is a show of old ballroom dances from viennese waltz to polonaise. The 12th year students leave school at the end of February to have time to prepare for their final exams and the day after they have left the 11th year students celebrate being the oldest kids in school. There are no normal classes, you show up in the morning wearing your chosen costume/suit/dress and spend the day roaming around classrooms, giving candy to "little kids" and just generally having a laugh. It's called day of the "Wanhat" which literally means "Ye olde".

In the afternoon you dance for the entire school and in some places also nearby elementary/grade schools come to watch if it's convenient to do so. In the evening there's the ball for you and all parents/close family. When it was my turn I went for a medieval style blue dress (I was going through a major medieval period fandom at the time.. mostly thanks to Kaari Utrio's totally awesome historical adventure romance books), year later my little sister went for a green rococo dress. Our aunt made them both and went a little crazy at times but got there in the end. We didn't look quite as good as my drawing but this is pretty much what we wore. :)

Pencil drawing, colours in photoshop.

WOW! Heck, I wish my school was inventive as this...I want a dress like either of these so much it hurts x] I don't know when I'd wear it but it sure would be absolutely lovely.

I wish, wish, WISH my school would do something like this...just because we're in secondary they think we're too old for dressing up...

Honestly don't remember anymore, it was in a book of medieval designs that I got out of the library at the time. And I did simplify the original image a bit to make it easier to sew. Iirc the original picture's dress had fur-lined sleeves and there were a lot more little details/embroidery.
